After testing out the installation and use of the new Shopping Cart software called "Magento" on our servers we now offer a paid installation service to our customers.

The size of the Magento installation files is substantial (69 Megabytes) and we offer the paid installation service in the knowledge that many customers will not wish to undertake that amount of work themselves.

The cost if a one-off fee of £50.00 plus vat at 17.5%. The paid installation can be purchased as an Add-On during checkout.

TerraNetwork to begin providing hosting for Magento

Magento is a new open-source eCommerce shopping cart programme and within the next weeks TerraNetwork will begin the provision of hosting and installation services for this new programme.

Unlike ReadyCart, osCommerce or Zen Cart the size of the files required for installation are very large (69 megabytes), and for this reason we will be offering a paid installation service at £50.00 plus VAT. Customers will of course retain the ability to just purchase hosting and to install Magento for themselves.

Initially hosting for Magento will only be provided on our 'stargate' server because Magento requires the use of PHP versions higher than PHP 5.2.0 and 'stargate' is the only server which uses PHP 5 exclusively. This will change at the end of July when all servers are switched to use PHP 5 only.

Atlantis Replacement Schedule Update - Important!

This further update about the replacement schedule for the Atlantis server has become necessary, after the server was built and sent to the data centre and failed stress bench testing. This rigorous testing is carried out to try and make sure that it holds up to the rigours of heavy usage. Unfortunately the unit proved to be defective and has been returned to the supplier.

This means that we cannot proceed with its replacement tomorrow night, and have rescheduled it for next Sunday night, starting at 10 pm on Sunday 22nd June. Out of consideration for your business we did not want to reschedule the changeover for a weekday night.

We can confirm that the new server has been delivered to the Data Centre and has completed bench testing. It is already racked up and ready for the changeover starting at 10 pm on Sunday 22nd June.

We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Schedule to replace "Atlantis"

We can now confirm that we will be replacing the existing Atlantis Server with a brand new, higher-spec, server on Sunday 15th of this month (this coming Sunday). We shall begin the process at 10pm (UK Time).

We can also now confirm that the new server will use the ip address of the old server, thus preventing disruption for those of our customers who use Protx as their payment provider.

To prevent emails and orders getting mixed between the two servers (old and new) we shall take the old Atlantis offline at 10pm, and it will remain offline until the new server comes online. We expect this process to take several hours.

By doing this late on Sunday night we hope to minimise inconvenience for our customers, but we cannot complete the process without a period of disruption as the old server is backed up to the new server and the new server booted up in its place.

Atlantis server to be replaced

On Tuesday 10th June we experienced an outage on the Atlantis server which we believe was hardware related. After a thorough checking of all logs we could find no indication that the problem was software related. This type of outage resulted in the server having to be restarted manually by engineers in the data centre and the total downtime was around 1 hour. This is totally unacceptable to us.

As the problem could have been caused by any one of several pieces of hardware we have decided to replace the entire server with a brand new model rather than replace the hardware piece by piece until the problem is located. Although the existing Atlantis server is only 15 months old and could normally be expected to last for 2 to 3 years without major problems we feel that a complete replacement is the most prudent course of action.

At this moment in time the swap-over of the old Atlantis Server with the new Atlantis server is tentatively scheduled to begin between 10pm and midnight this coming Sunday. The server name will remain unchanged, as will the server dns addresses and the dedicated ip addresses of websites which have Full SSL Certificates installed. We have our server administrators running tests to see if the main ip address of the server can be transferred from the old to the new and will update you on that by editing this announcement.

The old Atlantis server had 2 Dual Core CPUs whilst the new server will have 2 Quad Core CPUs, doubling the CPU Resource on the server. We know from our Stargate server, which has the same hardware, that this will result in faster load times on the new Atlantis server.

We apologise for the recent problems experienced by customers with sites on our Atlantis server and hope that its replacement will bring about a full return to the reliability you have come to expect from us.

More good news about our Full SSL Certificates!

Recently we switched from providing Geo Trust SSL Certificates to providing Comodo SSL Certificates, and we thought we'd tell you a little bit more about that.

Occasionally we did need to contact Geo Trust support about the issuance of a Certificate, and we found that on an American Public Holidays or during any weekend that their support response fell below what we expected. This was why we initially decided to move providers to Comodo. Since moving we have been much happier with Comodo's support response times.

From a customer point of view it has been a success as well. Although the Comodo SSL Certificates are much more expensive for us to buy we have not passed that increase on to our customers. Do you see a pattern developing here?

1. We register for VAT but keep our web hosting prices the same, taking the 17.5% hit ourselves!

2. We have doubled the Web Space and Bandwidth allowances on all individual hosting accounts at no extra cost, and markedly increased allowances for our Resellers!

3. Every time we bring online a new server we have one built to our own specification using the best "state of the art" hardware available.

4. We purchase a much more expensive SSL Certificate for our customers but keep our prices the same, also absorbing the VAT on these products at the same time!

Additionally the Comodo SSL Certificate comes with a Dynamic Site Seal, which the Geo Trust Certificates we used to purchase do not have. Furthermore the Comodo SSL Certificate comes with a $10,000 (approximately 5,000 UK Pounds) Warranty on the security of their encryption for each site owner that uses their certificates.

More reasons for the customers of TerraNetwork to be very happy with the service we provide!

Previously only Business Hosting packages and above were allowed to purchase our Dedicated IP Address and Full SSL Certificate add-on, but with the launch of this new site all hosting packages can purchase this add-on.

This means that even Starter and Advanced hosting package owners can now purchase Full SSL for their websites!
